I hk statement issued by Mr Forbes for consideration over the week end in regard to the national financial posit-ion was so clear and concise, that those who have studied it must have been impressed with the logic of the situation. The country is accumulating a very substantial deficit. The cause of this is well known and fully realised by those studying the export business of the Dominion. To allow the condition of drift to go on would be suicidal to the national welfare, for a financial climax would arise, and Now Zealand would drift into the 'unserviceable position Australia is placed in. Tt is essential to balance the Budget. Mr Forbes like a true statesman, has tackled the job, unpleasant though the task be. It is not pleasant to reverse existing conditions which under happier trading conditions have existed over a long time. But it is necessary to save the country from financial disaster, and the Prime Minister proposes to meet the position with economics and reductions, which unpleasant though the action is, are unavoidable. With the Government rests the responsibility of selecting the line ot policy, and it will he for Parliament, which meets in a little over three weeks’ time, tn pass judgment on (lie policy. There are indications that the Labour Party as a whole will not support the economies proposed. But some of the Party representing country interests at least, will he impelled probably to assist the man on the land who is the backbone of the country's financial stability. The Reform Party will he disposed to support the Government in most of the proposals brought down, and with that vote assured, the new policy will be adopted. Later in the year, the country will he given the opportunity to pass judgment on the Government action. Before that time arrives there will he reasonable opportunity to study the position, and time to form fair and impartial opinion on what is proposed. The Government is attempting an all round reduction in costs whereby production will ho cheaper and commodities will reach the consumer at less cost. Tim reduction in wages and salaries is substantial, but without award

rates under the Arbitration Act, being a Hu) reviewed, it would be unfair to reduce the one and not the other. It is the intention of the Government to effect an all round reduction. That is equitable and should ho effective in cutting down costs, and thereby cheapening production and enabling a greater out nut to result. As Mr Forbessaid. the level of wages has created a top-hcavv condition of affairs, and it is essential to remedy the injury being done. The Government has earned the >vmpalhv and support- of the nublia in its evident desire to achieve the end desired. It attempts a reconstructive policy which is founded on the one desire to do right by all. It hopes to achieve the greatest good for the great- ! est number, and to that attainment it should have the best wishes of all.

Tile Christchurch Corsair Social Club hold a very successful railway excursion to Lake Maliinapua yesterday. The train was exceedingly well patronised, excelling i.’X])C(’tations. Some 520 excursioni'ts left Christchurch early yesterday morn ins; for the Coast, departing in the rain, which by the way was very welcome for the crops. Perfect weather prevailed on the Const for the reception of the visitors. A number detrained at (li-eymonth and also at Hokitika, to stop over with friends, but the bulk of the excursionists completed the journey. The train departed tin return from Lake Maliinapua at 5 p.m., passing through Hokitika about 5.30. The visitors reported a capital outing had resulted. They thought Lake Maliinapua an ideal spot for a large picnic. T'ke bush track approach to the lake was admired greatly. The coppers lately installed at the expense of the local Tourist Association, proved most convenient, and helped greatly. The Committee of the Corsair Social Club expressed thanks for all that had been done, and Imped to arrange another excursion later. At Paster time the club’s excursion will be to Dunedin.

There was a somewhat unhappy position at the conclusion of the play for the champion of champion singles at Runanga on Saturday. The play was arranged that each of the six competitors should play each other 21 heads, and that in the event of their being any ties for the winning position at the conclusion that a further 21 beads should he played by the players so affected. When the fifth round was being played two competitors were level when the 21st. head had been completed, and they were called on to play another head to bring a decision to the winner. One competitor objected to this course, claiming that it was a. tie. and that a further 21 beads should he played. There was a considerable amount of heat- shown by .supporters of both players, and much quoting of the rules. The Committee of Management nmt and decided that there was no tie in the terms of the rules and that all that was necessary was for an extra head to he played to find the winner of that game. This was aecordinglv done, and the winner having scored four wins, one more than any other competitor was Doled singles champion of the West Coast for the year.
