PENALTY ON RATES
UNIQUE POSITION DISCLOSED. WAIROA, February 10. A unique position was disclosed at last night’s meeting of the Wuiroa Borough Council when the question of imposing the IQ per cent, penalty on rates came up for discussion. The section of the Act, which was | read, showed that any councillor in arrears could not vote on a resolution granting him any financial benefit, and this would he the ease if the councillors present voted for remission of the 10 per cent, penalty. The information came as a bombshell for only one councillor present had paid liis rates, although allowed until the end of February to do so. After a lengthy discussion, the meeting adjourned until Thursday to enable the council to communicate with the Minister of Internal Affairs seeking relief.
