THE ECONOMIC POSITION

ATTITUDE OF MINISTER. WELLINGTON, February 10. “T believe the feeling of Ministers is that they are prepared to do what is thought to be in the best interests of the country, irrespective of what the results may be to themselves personally,” remarked the Minister of Defence (Mr J. G. Cobbe) when invited this afternoon to comment on the attitude of the Ministry to the country’s eeonnmic difficulties. “Parliament will assemble for a special session on Wednesday, March 11, to give consideration to tlie economic position of the country and legislation that might be necessary as a result of last week’s earthquake in Hawke’s Bay. Some idea of the measures the Government considers necesary to meet tile many economic problems facing the Dominion will no doubt be given in the comprehensive statement the Prime Minister (Mr G. W. Forbes) intends to make at an early date. But for the calamity that statement ivould have been public property by now. Addressing a de. putation arranged by the Associated Chambers of Commerce a week ago today, just as the first alarming accounts of the disaster were coining to hand, Mr Forbes spoke with the confidence and determination of a man realising the difficulties confronting him, hut with the events in Hawke’s Bay his burdens have been multiplied.”
