February 13. An unusual charge of theft was preferred against Aubrey Edward Clarke at the Magistrates Court. The evidence showed that a newsrunner received half a sovereign for a paper, giving fourpeneo change. On discovering the coin was not a sixpence, be took it to Clarke s shop. Accused told him it was half a sovereign, but did not explain its value, giving him ninepence for it. The defence was accused was merely keeping the coin for the lad. The Magistrate said it was a theft by a trick. and a very mean and contemptible thing. The accused was fined £2.
