THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES.
HOPE SPRINGS ETERNAL. Worth keeping in mind in these difficult days in Hawkes Bay is the motto /of a sister-province, Canterbury. A literal translation on the Latin, Ergo tua rura manebunt, is, “Therefore thy lands shall remain.” Hawkes Bay should take that motto as a thought to sustain her in the present calamity. Jn a moment of time millions have been lost in capital of various kinds. Nevertheless “thy lands shall remain”—the broad sweep of the sheep runs, the rich pastures of the dairy farms, and the smiling orchards* The social and economic organisation that serves the land has been thrown out of gear meanwhile but the broad acres on which the towns and their industries, their banks, shops and factories are based, remain as productive as ever. 1 hey made possible the urban development and will stimulate it once again in their service, —The Dominion.
