ROSS NEWS.
(Our Own Correspondent.) The Kanieri Tennis players journeyed to Ros.s on Saturday and played a series of games with the local teams. The weather was perfect for outdoor games and a most enjoyable afternoon was spent. The home team were the winners. The following are the results ; Ross players being mentioned first: MENS SINGLES. SUCCESSFUL BALL. The ball which was held on. Friday evening in the Totara Hall was a most successful function. The programme consisted mostly of Old Time Dances with Mr W. Wright Senr. as M.C., assisted by Mr It- Richards and the Old Timers as well as the younger folk spend a very happy evening. Miss Parker’s Ross Orchestra pupplied the music which as usual was the best. A very enjoyable supper was also provided. BAZAAR, The Presbyterian Church annual bazaar and sale of work took place on Saturday afternoon and evening and was well patronised. Tile result being more than anticipated seeing we are passing through such a slumpy period. UNEMPLOYMENT MEETING. A largely attended public meeting was held in tlhe Totara Hall last Wednesday evening, the Mayor (H. Osmcrs Esq.) presiding. A committee was set up to deal with the unemployment situation consisting of tlie following. To represent Ross Borough Council: The Mayor (H. Osmcrs), Town Clerk (A. W. Peebles), and Cr. K. 0. May. Religious Bodies: —Riev. Father O’Doherty and Rev. D. McClymont. Labour:—John Rea. Farmers :—A. Hedwig. Employers : —G. H. Chapman. R.S.A.: —J. M. Allan. Postmaster: —D. O’Connell. At a meeting held immediately afterwards the Mayor was appointed Chairman and A. W. Peebles and K. 0. joint secretaries. About 12 are registered as unemployed so far but it is expected the number will increase to a much larger number witliin the next week or so. The local Council have work mapped out and the No. 5 scheme will be put into operation immediately. THE WEATHER. We are at last getting a little summer weather, the last few days being full days of bright sunshine. January was one of the worst months on record there being 21 wet days with a total rainfall of 24 inches the maximum being 4.58.
