THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES
COUNTING THE COST. The promptitude with which steps were taken to cope with this unprecedented emergency does New Zealand credit. From all sides flowed streams ot help. It was a piece of really good fortune that the Navy was in a position to give immediate assistance, and the rapidity with which relief was organised and despatched by the cruisers is fresh proof of the resourcefulness of the Service. The Government lias lost no time on organising relief, and several Ministers left at once for the scene of the disaster. It is too early yet to say what sums of money will be necessary to help Hawkes Bay to recover from this terrible blow, but it looks as if the main burden of relief would have to fall on the State, and the damage may be so great that it may be necessary to summon Parliament immediately.—Auckland Star.
