ALARMIST REPORTS. HASTINGS DENIAL. HASTINGS, February 6. The public are earnestly asked to give limited attention to any alarmist reports that are being issued from .sumo sources. Amongst some of the statements made has been one that martial law had been established and a curfew imposed upon the people of Hastings. The whole of this statement is the rankest exaggeration. What happened is that volunteers, consisting of ex-Territorials and ex-Ser-viceinen, consented to do patrol-picket duty. The town is still governed by eivillaw, and a curfew has not been heal'd, unless by the person from whom the report emanated. Inaccurate casualty lists are also being sent out. Th<> list supplied to the Press Association may he taken as an official list, and is compiled under the strictest precautions. Even then it is not impossible • that errors may occur. Nothing, however, in that list is published without the sanction of the police. Looting has not even been feared, and the only precautions taken in the way of guarding property are merely those that are usual to such occasions. The police state officially that not a single instance of looting lias been reported.
The statement that the people are losing their nerve is to be treated carefully. Naturally, they are feeling some strain, hut they will carry on, as they are doing now, grimly and calmly, and with a wonderful courage.

BASE CAMPS. AVAR.AI PRAISE FOR ORGANISATION. PALMERSTON N., Feb. G. Aressrs Coates, Ransom and Masters to-day inspected the base camp at Palmerston North and relief organisation, warm praise coming from Air Ransom. The latter denied martial law was declared in the stricken area. Strong committees formed for the evacuation of Napier, were not demanded, it being highly desirable people would leave owing to the breakdown in the sanitation system through the lack of water. It is hoped to have the service restored ns soon as the pipes are functioning along tbe Marine Parade. The work of clearing the debris is undertaken by the Public Works Department. Mr Ransom is returning to Wellington to confer with Afr Forbes as to the Government action.
“The organisation at Napier was wonderful.” said Ah' Ransonp “Great work was done at the base hospitals. The Veronica is not actually stranded. It is doubtful whether she will be able to get out. The depth of water off the const is continually changing. I regard the whole thing as a national responsible loss to the community. It is so great that it is impossible to expect their rehabilitation without very generous financial assistance by the Government, The amount depends upon Cabinet’s decision, but it will be sufficient with public contributions to meet the case.”
SLIP DAMS RIVER. RUT AY AIR 0 A NOT MENACED. AYAIROA. February 6. There is no truth in an alarming press wire from AYellington stating that a great Hood is like to sweep dow on AYairoa should the earth dam break in Hie AVaikareheke River. A slip occurred in the Waikaremoana Road on Tuesday. It is a quarter of ~ niile in length, but the water of the river mentioned quickly forced its way through, and there was never any danger of a flood. Everything is normal. No damage was done at Tuai. BRITISH Al.P.’s ANXIETY. LONDON. February 5. Among the scores of inquirers concerning the New Zealand earthquake was a. member of the House of Commons, Major Graham Pole, who is anxiously awaiting news of his youngest I daughter. NAPIER REPORT. SOM E CONTR A DICTION 8. AVELLINGTON, February 6. The Press Association agent at Napier, in a message timed 8.32 p.m. on Friday states:—A few slight shocks were felt this afternoon and if the slackening the tremors are any indication, tlte conditions have improved. The weather is fine and the Parks are now more than half evacuated. Women, children and unfit men are being sent away and fit men are being refused permission to depart, the po lice calling for workers to assist in the clearing of the debris also patrols for night duty.
There is no intention of introducing martial law, the police say on tiie contrary that such a step is neither necessary nor advisable as all are behaving splendid
Report* of shootings are officially contradicted and also the statement that two women were rescued alive. An old man of sixty-six was released from the Old Peoples Home to-day alive, although information from a reliable source of confirmation is lack-
AVondcrful work has been done by volunteer workers and will probably result in the prevention of an outbreak of dreaded typhoid as at present the town is clean, Indications point to the fight being successfully concluded. The work of dismantling dangerous buildings is proceeding with precision and the debris was carted awav.
As an indication oi the organisation, it can he stated that all bouses on the fiats have been provided with iron for roof repairs, which is proceeding, Tho work of re-organising the National Tobacco Coys, building was started to-day, 150 men being employed,
The “Daily is to erect temporary premises as soon as possible. The paper has issued a small sheet daily since- AVednesdav, two editions being printed to-day. Another lairly strong shake occurred at 7.50 p.m. Trains have recommenced. An express train leaves in the morning for AA’ellington, but passengers will be mostly refugees, who have been granted free transport.
Owing to the Fire Station being burnt out, the engines are stationed near salt water wells in various parts.
AA’hilst every house has been more or less seriously damaged most are habitable, but nervous people refuse to permit their occupation. In most cases people are still sleeping out. Water is now more plentiful.
Postal people have overcome the mail difficuljtifes, but chore is no letter deliveries owing to so many being away from home and the Telegraph Department is now operating almost up to normal. The Money Order Office is opened, where withdrawals are tbe only business being done. Electric light is available in post office, parks and roads leading thereto, creating a greater feeling of security.
LATER SHOCKS RECORDED AT KERB UR N, AVELLINGTON, February 6. The shocks recorded at Kelburn during the 24 hours till nine o’clock tills morning number ten. One at 8.58 p.m. was pronounced, and was felt locally. AERO ART UNION GIFT. FIRST £I,OOO PROFIT. BLENHEIM, February G. WELLINGTON, Feb. R. “They won’t even find the ashes of hundreds." said one gentlemen reporting to the Salvation Army headquarters this morning. “For instance cars were passing along the street and were also parked as we see them and crushed them to pieces.
