THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES

NEED FOR HELP, Overshadowing all other considerations involved in the terrible earthquake disaster which has occurred in Hawke's Bay is that of the urgent need for relief of those who are suffering physieinlly through the upheaval. The first reaction of the public to the appalling affair has very rightly and naturally been in the direction of offering sympathy to those who have been bereaved or injured in the catastrophe, and of preparing such aid ns they can to the organisations which are providing immediate succour. The next thought will relate to the tremendous losses of property consequent on the earthquake, and a seriously important consideration, affecting this aspect of the disaster, is that policies of insurance against the risk of fire do not generally afford protection against damage to properties caused by earthquakes. —Otago Daily Times.
