ACCIDENT IN SUBMARINE
SIX OF CREW SERIOUSLY INJURED. RUGBY, February 3. The Admiralty announces that an accident occurred in Submarine 11 in the Thames Estuary. An explosion occurred in the crankcase of the port main engine, caused by a temporary seizure of the piston. Six ratings were seriously injured and six suffered minor injureis. The accident on the submarine was most dramatic. Half-naked stokers were sprayed with boiling oil and seamen were stunned with broken woodwork. When the explosion shook the vessel, 130 men were aboard and the ship was travelling at a speed of thirty knots. A dumber of the crew collapsed in agony from burns. A wireless call was flashed for doctors at Chatham. Fortunately the actual harm tvas less than it at-first appeared.
