VIEW INTO CRATER
CLIMB ON HOT SURFACE. THE CHATEAU, January 30. Three visitors, Mrs Paul Thomson, oi Devonport ; Miss T. Johnson, of Rotorua, and the Rev. C. Duneomb, of Timaru, with a Chateau guide ascended to the crater of Ngauruhoe this week and had a view of the steaming and throbbing interior. The ascent was made in five hours and it was mainly a rock climb, as the snow lies only in the deeper valleys at this time of the year. For the last 200yds. the climbers walked on a surface almost as hot as a kitchen stove and it was a relief to reach the lip of the crater.
Tlie crater lip on the eastern side of the mountain was found to have broken away, but it was difficult to get a clear view owing to the vast column of steam that rose steadily from the bottom of the crater.
