A heavv Hood came down the rivet m the afternoon rising steadily fill at 1.0 p.m. at high water it was the highest of tinrecent floods, the spring tides helping to back up the Hood waters. There was some backing up of the 'drains and water lay in the lower portions ol the town till the tide ran out «gain. This morning the river conditions were almost normal.

Reports from South Westland indicate that the flood assumed suijslantfir proportions and that it was something of a record for the season. At the Big Wanganui the Hood waters broke through some of the protection works, and it large body of water made its way down the Flat causing considerable damage and loss to stock. The Little Wanganui river over flowed its banks, and its a result there was a big Hood in La Fontaine creek which backed up from the Big Wanganui river, causing a heavy Hooding of the settlers’ properties in the vicinity. Traffic was held up yesterday owing to the flooded state of the roads, hut it was hoped to ho able to get through to-da v.

Reports to-day are meagre as to the position, though the floods were reported to be rapidly receding.
