PUBLIC SERVICE

UNFOUNDED RUMOURb. GOVERNMENT’S POLICY. WELLINGTON, January. 3K. During the past few weeks rumours have been afloat on the policy of the Government in regard to the Public Service; but these in the main have been unfounded. The report that men who had 35 years’ service were being retired in practically all Government Departments lias mythical foundations. This is not so far the policy of the Government or the Public Service Commissioner. In tne Government Printing Office, a few men with over 35 years’ service have been retired on account of slackness of work ; but this policy has not applied to other Departments. The work in the Printing Office is very slack and rather than have men walking about doing nothing it is deemed advisable to put off those men who are best able to bear it. It is considered a better policy to retire men with 35 years’ service on a slightly smaller-superannua-tion than they would get at JO years, than to put off men who. are a long way ■hom the retiring limit and who would sweii tire ranks of the unemployed
