NEW MOTOR CARGO LINER. LONDON, December 11. Hie first of the three new cargo motor ships for the New Zealand Shipping Company, the Otaio, is at I-resent undergoing her trials, having recently come out of Messrs VickersArmstrong’s yard at Barrow. She will leave Liverpool for the Dominion with a general cargo on January 3rd. Captain Mean, recently of the s.s. Norfolk. and one of the oldest officers of the company, Tuts been chosen to Labe charge of the new ship. In view of the size (490 ft. bv 07R.. vith gross tonnage of 10,048 and deatweight capacity of 12,610 tons), ud the speed (15-3 knots), the Otaio ie--lic rents a notable vessel, and the cm .nany are very proud of her. T ie engines installed represent the largest of the Doxford type that have hitherto been constructed from the tanapoint of cylinder diameter. The Doxford engines are something quite new to the company, but they lnve bean used by the Commonwealth and Domir.’on Line for some years with .satisfaction and economy. There are thiee 300 kw, Diesel-driven electric generators An entirely new system is omp'oyrd in the recovery of heat from the exhaust gases. The system is wed for driving a dynamo engine, hetting the crew’s accomodation, and for evaporating up to 20 tons of distilled wa.-.ii’ daily. This Is used to make up |or any losses in the engine tr* -h----wiuc-r circulating system. CARGO SPACE. Ihe refrigerated cargo space is exceptionally large, the II insulalto ’tween deck and hold spaces having a total capacity of about 420,000 mine lent inside Lite insulation, besides tin instated provision chambers on tin mam deck. The two quadruple Oj_ compressors are of the J. and E. Hall s type, and one can maintain the icquir.d temperature. A 165 b.li.p. variable speed motor direct coupled to the crankshaft is utilised for each com j. ressor. The equipment includes two centrifugal sea-water circulating pumps, four brine circulating pump.-, and a vertical duplex plunger circulating pump for dealing with the provision rooms and the outward cargo ret ms. HOLDS AND DERRICKS. Lour holds are each served by four j j ton cargo derricks, and No. L and No. 6 holds are each served by two 10-ton derricks. A 50-ton derrick is tinri< j d for use in Nos. 2 and 3 Hatchways for specially heavy lifts, There are 16 Clarke, Chapman silent w j: m-geared cargo winches capaole if exerting a pull of six tons at 100 feet per minute and driven by 48 h.p. motors at 200 r.p.m. Four warping winches similar to the cargo winches hut with 18-in. warp ends on the entbcard side and 24-in. warp ends tm the inboard side are included in tie deck equipment, whilst the Ghvke, Chapman windless is also electri ••••Uy driven, coupled to a 5 h.p. motor mil n!r,g at 350 r.p.m. It will deal wh.h 20-Bin. stud-link cable and can oxera direct pull of 19.) tons at 25 Pe 1 per minute.
