Mr E. S. Baldwin, vice consul for Argentine lias received instructions from the Government of the Republic, to use all possible means to provent emigration to that country and is informing applicants that work cannot be lound there.
SURCHARGE ON FREIGHTS

WELLINGTON. January 30.
In consequence of the latest increase in rates of exchange, New Zealand on London, overseas shipping companies announce the surcharge on freight piepaid in New Zealand on general cargo, lias been increased from. 7j to ten per cent a similar increase has been made in the surcharge on passage money paid in New Zealand. The surcharge operates on freight paid on and alter ;}jst. January and is made subject to exchange tluctuntions.
