(Bn Telenru-pli —Per Press Association )
WESTi'ORT, January 27
The West Coast tennis tournament opened at the Brougham Street courts Westport, this morning, in dull, threat ening weather. However, the tournament was begun, and was continued until 3 p.m., when rain stopped play lor the remainder of the afternoon. During tlie day 48 matches were played, and some line tennis was shown by the contestants of the various events. The Canterbury players did well, winning all of their matches in ifie first round, with the exception of one. Sullivan (Canterbury) and McCarthy (Grey) gave an interesting exhibition in the first round of the men’s singles. The Canterbury player lost the first set 6—2. He improved his pay in the second set, and put up a good fight to 4—o. This game however, finally went to McCarthy, after 13 deuces had been called. McCarthy was much steadier • than usual, and he placed his shots accurately. The ladies’ champion doubles provided some good tennis, and the matches were much closer than the scores indicate.
