CORRESPONDENCE

(To the Editor): •Sir.—The gold mining industry is assuming a better outlook than it has done for the last few years and the general tone is to further our miueiUi resources, not only on the Most Coast of the South island, but other parts of the Dominion. The Hon. Minister of Mines is on the move evidently with the intention of going into the question of advancing the gold mining industry as it would be a disaster to this country it we were to allow the indus try to die out. Gold is a very needful commodity and the industry should receive all encouragement for its production. There is a magic quality as gold in itself is not worth the move melit of n muscle to obtain if it does not possess that quality in mating the lot of man happier. State aid would be a stimulus towards restoring the industry to prosperity. It only needs a rumour of gold to send men flocking in the direction of a new find, and something productive, towards casing the question of unemployment as at present exists. The Mines Department will have to deal with the question of giving a more generous assistance and providing access to remote or difficult localities and it is hoped should the Hon. Minister of Mines visit Hokitika something in a definite manner will he placed before him bv our local bodies and that it will hear fruit and advantage to the district. In closing I should say it is work that is wanted not the dole system. Yours Etc. WORKER.
