AUCKLAND'S WIN
(By Teleyruph —Per Brass Association)
AUCKLAND. .Jan. 26,
Unexpected batting failures saw the conclusion to-day of the Plunket Shield cricket match between Auckland ana Wellington at- Eden Park, the home team winning by 1(37 runs. The Auckland batsmen failed in the second innings, and tlie side was dismissed for 174, ,1. E. .Mills 50, and C. L. Weir 50 not out, being the only batsmen to score confidently.
Wellington was set 239 to get for victory, but tailed dismally before the bowling of A. E. Wensley and C. E. Allcott, and were all out for 71. The wicket could not really be blamed for tlie batting lailures. An occasional ball kept low. but most of tlie batsmen were out to half-hearted strokes. Mills who was; not out with 25 on Saturday, continued to give a brilliant display until lie hit a hall on to his pads, whence it rolled on to the wickets. Weir played clianceless cricket for 1(53 minutes lor 58. Lambert was the most successful Wellington howler, taking four for 3(3.
The visitors’ innings, aftor a careful start by Dempster and Cameron, degenerated into procession. Wensley and Allcott both howled well, and tlie Wellington batsmen assisted them by playing- hack practically all the time. .MeGirr" was the only batsman to attempt to attack the bowling.
