TO SALVE ’PLANE
VOYAGE TO THE ICE BARRIER
NEW YORK, Dec 26. Lien tenant-Comma ndcr ,Sten house, R.N., who commanded the Aurora during Sir Ernest Shackleton’s expedition and Sir Douglas Mawson’s voyage in the Discovery, will lead the expedition about to visit the Polar seas, hoping to penetrate the lee Barrier and salvage the big tri—motored, all-metal aeroplane that carried RearAdmiral Byrd across the Polar regions.
Commander Stenhou.se does not know how long it will require to bring the aeroplane over the sea ice to his ship. It depends on conditions, how had the weather has been, and the amount of ice and snow covering the machine.
If the weather be warm, permitting his ship to get close to the aeroplane, it will simplify his problem.
| The Stella Polaris, 6,000 ton motor yacht, lias been strengthened for tlie trip through the Antarctic ice. Capi tain Lief Elleison will be in charge of the vessel, under the direct command of Lieutenant-Commander Stenhouse.
To meet expenses, the Stella Polaris will carry 80 passengers. The expedition will cruise seven days ill the Ross Sea, anchor in the Bay of Whales, and visit th .eWinter quarters of Scott and visit tbe winter quarters of Scott py six months, the plan being to visit Australia, New Zealand, and the South Seas, Asiatic, and European ports. If Rear-Admiral Byrd’s aeroplane is salvaged, it will be exhibited in America and possibly preserved among the United States archives.
