Kis Honour Mr Justice Duffy, the newly appointed Chief Justice of the Federal High Court, has been a Justice of the. High Court of Australia since 1913. He was born in Dublin seventy-nine years ago, his father being Sir Charles Duffy, a one time member of the House of Commons and later Premier of Victoria. Mr Justice Duffy was called to the Bar in 1847 after being an officer of the State Treasury Department. He was made a K.C. in 1901. Of his three surviving sons, two are banisters and the third is a priest. Among the unlucky people of the city of Christchurch, Mr Hoy Smith, hardware salesman, take* a prominent place. It is his habit to carry his wares in a hand-bag on his bicycle, and on Tuesday afternoon he left his bicycle outside a city shop for a few minutes. When he came out the hand-bag, containing valuable tools, had been stolen. On Thursday he left about CIO worth of tools on bis bicycle outside a shop, and when he came out bicycle and all had vanished. The police have the matter in hand.
