NEW SHOT-PUT RECORD

The touring American athletes Simpson, Kiser, and Rotheri., made their premier appearance in the Dominion at M.asterton to-day. Simpson and Kiser did not perform up to expectations. and they obviously were not in anything like their true ionn. Rotliert, however, was in line iettle, and in the putiing-lhe-shot event, he broke the existing Australian and New Zealand record o) Kilt fin., established in 1921 by P. Minim, of Wellington. Rotliert’s distance was K-M'i. (i.'.ins.

In his heal of the hundred yards, Simpson clocked 9 1-5 secs, but he tailed to run through the Held in the filial.

The furlong event provided a thrilling contest between Simpson, who is the world’s record holder for this distance. and C. .Jenkins, the New Zealand sprint champion. Jenkins was off the two yards mark, and Simpson ran from scratch. Simpson got a flying start, and. running with splendid action, he caught -Jenkins about 30yds from the tape. The New Zealand Champion, however, came to light with a great burst ot speed to beat the American by inches. Ihe time was 2] -I-."), which equalled the best performance that has been put up by the New Zealander.

Kiser, who competed in the halt mile and mile, was not impressive. He failed to get placed in the 880yds. and in the mile he was well and truly beaten by E. V. Wills, the Queensland mile champion, who now resides at Nelson.
