OBITUARY

Ml, \V. J. ANDERSON.

WELLINGTON, January 21

T’lie death is announced of Dr William John Anderson, an ex-Director of Education.

The late Dr Anderson was horn in Ireland and educated at Queen’s College, Belfast, and Queen’s University, where he gained the degrees of Master of Arts and Doctor of Law. He came as a young man to New Zealand. He married in 1905 Miss May Cuddon, a daughter of Mr William Cudtlen. of Femlalton. He had held teaching positions in Ireland and Queensland, and was in 1884 appointed inspector of schools in South Canterbury. In 1880 lie was transferred to a similar position in Christchurch. In 1900 lie became assistant inspector-general of schools, and eight years later Director of Education. He retired on superannuation in 1921. alter thirty-seven years’ service with the New Zealand Education Department.
