The deposits, apart from Government deposits, totalled £sl ~‘173,396, and the advances and discounts £54,-582.7-18, thus exceeding the deposits by over three millions. These figures themselves seem to afford an answer to the question. “What has become of all the money? Where is it?” Necessarily. the banks cannot denude themselves of funds to an extent that would render thorncelves unable to meet the demands of their depositors, but, even if they are exhibiting unusual caution just now in making advances, it is at any rate clear that between them they have lent out considerably more than the amount deposited with them,
