The weather cleared yesterday afternoon, and to-day broke fine though cloudy. There was a very strong current in the river yesterday, though the flood waters continued to fall rapidly as the tide went out, but. the very muddy nature of the water showed that there must have been a very heavy movement among the snow-clad bills. So far there Ims not been any report of any damage locally.
An increase of five cases ol infectious and other notifiable diseases, as compared with the previous week, was recorded in the Canterbury and West Coast health districts for the week ended noon on Monday. Mr Guy Men/.ios and his partner, Mr Albert E. James were to leave Christchurch to-day in the Southern Cross Junior for Auckland, calling in at Wellington and other places en route. The Hood in the river yesterday has washed away all the large sandbank on the inside ol the south protection works and this morning with a heavy sea running tlie waves came right up the middle channel making it extremely dangerous, even for an experienced boatman to make the crossing to Mnhinapua Creek.
