A cfiargeNif wearing the uniform and badge of the Boy Scouts’ Association when he was not a member was preferred in tlie Police Court against Phillip Henry Ross, aged thirty-seven, a native of South Africa, described as a labour, who stated that he had been about to start on a walking tour irom Auckland to Dunedin when r.e was arrested. After accused had entered a plea of not guilty, Detective-Sergeant Kelly asked for a remand until Saturday.'
“Ross was in possession of certain decorations which aye worth inquiring into’” lie said. “He has worn the ribbon of the D.C.M., the Victory Medal and a French badge. He said he had served in the German East Africa campaign, but if that is so he could not have gained some of these decorations.”
“1 said nothing of the sort,” declarer*. Ross. “J was with the Light Horse in the German East Africa campaign and 1 got, the P.C.M. there. I object to a remand, 1 was arrested on one charge which is apparently to be dropped while a hew one is brought. J nsk that the charge should ho heard now.” He was wearing tlie ribbons In punlie about tlie streets as well as the scouts’ regalia, and that is a breach ol the 1918 Act,” said Mr Kelley.
The Magistrate (Mr Woodward) granted a remand and the DetectiveSergeant opposed the granting of bail.
“What are your reasons?” asked the Magistrate “My reasons are on this sheet,” replied Mr Kelly, who handed the Magistrate a typewritten .sheet. Accused, who was wearing the Scout uniform, asked if his civilian clothes could be procured. “1 do not want to go to Mount Eden in this regalia,” he said. “It was bad enough wearing it about the streets.”
“You put it on didn’t you?” askeu the Magistrate.
Accused: Yes. I. was to have walked from Auckland to Dunedin. That is why I was wearing shorts.
“That is not my concern. Aon will be remanded in custody until Saturday,’ replied the Magistrate.
