HUGE SUNFISH
AUCKLAND BOY’S CATCH. AUCKLAND, January 8. An exceptionally large sunfish, caught at Omaha Bay on Wednesday evening, was brought to Auckland today and was handed to the authorities of the War Memorial Museum, who will make a plaster cast of this unusual catch for exhibition purposes. The sunfish weighed over half a ton. The sunfish was seen swimming in the bay late on Wednesday afternoon and was eventually hooked by a boy in a dinghy, who used a large shark hook and gear. After taking the bait the fish towed the boat about t'be bay for some time and then ran aground and hauled ashore. The sunfish in shallow water, when it was secured which is roughly oval in shape, measures seven feet from its mouth to the end of its squat tail and approximately nine feet, between the tips of its two fins, which are set above and below the tail. The body is not much more than 18 inches in thickness and when swimming on edge as it does little can be seen beyond the upper fin.
