TERRIFIC TOLL
CROSSING FATALITIES.
CORONER’S COMMENT
PALMERSTON N.. January 7
“The New Zealand railways seem to he taking a terrific toll of human life, despite the automatic and other warning devices that have been erected at level crossings.” said the coroner, Mr A. J. Graham, this morning during an inquest on a victim of a recent levelcrossing tragedy in Palmerston North.
“The onus is on the public to take the necessary precautions and approaching car drivers must look in all directions to ascertain il a train is approaching.
"I am a I raid too many motorists are regardless in this connection and are
forgetful of the nerve-wracking experience it is for an engine-driver when an accident occurs. Further, when the public attempt to cross in I rout of an oncoming train they are endangering not only the lives of the enginedriver and the fireman hut also those of the passengers. 1 hope that this I year will see a reduction in the nump,Pr of accidents, and a more general recognition of the fact that extreme caution should at all times he observed when crossing over a level crossing.”
