Last week the freight railed thiough the Otira tunnel from the West Coast amounted to 1042 tons against 3077 tons for the corresponding period last year. In 1929 the amount was 2827 tons. The small amount recorded for each of the three years is due to the holiday during the week.
Having served for over 40 years in tlie Railway Department, Mr J. K. Lowe. District Engineer in Auckland for the past seven years, will retire on superannuation at the end o:’ this month. The period of Mr Lowe’s service in Auckland as District Engineer has been an important one, and a number of major works have been brought to completion under his direction.

Many old friends will hear with sincere regret of the death of Mrs Percy E. Webb, of Invercargill, following an operation for goir.re. The deceased was a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs J. M. Aitken, of Hokitika, and a sister of Airs J. A. C-esnev and Miss Aitken of Hokitika. Mrs Webb leaves a husband and grown up family of one daughter and two sons.
A reply has been received that- His Excellency the Governor-General approves generally of the arrangements for the visit 'to Hokitika on 31st inst. A meeting of ladies, comprising the Mayoress (Mrs Perry), and wives of Councillors, will bo held on 1 hursda\ afternoon next to finalise the social arrangements. It has been decided that the. Vice-Regal Party will visit the hospitals on Sunday forenoon (February Ist) prior to attending the Church service. The party depart south at 3.30 o’clock on the Sunday afternoon.
