ADVICE SOUGHT FROM MEAT BOARD.
TIMARU, January 7
Declaring that- it was the duty of the Meat Producers’ Board to advise farmers. Mr A. F. Campbell, at a meeting oi the- South Canterbury Executive of the Farmers’ Union to-day. sought information as to whether it would be better to sell this season’s lamb to the local meat companies or to ship it to the Old Country for disposal. Introducing his remarks, Mr Camphell said that the price for lamb at the local works was SRI. and it was Bid, at Home. Therefore he would like to know through the Meat Board whether farmers were getting enough fm- their lamb. He thought that the Meat Board should advise farmers whether to sell to the local works or to pool their lamb and ship it direct to the Old Country.
The chairman (Air J. Bitchener, M.P.) : The Meat Board doesn’t like to advise farmers m the way you suggest. Mr Campbell: But that is one of the duties of the Meat Board. Mr J. Trotter (a member of the Meat Board) snfd that he lutd had the same thing in his mind; but the Board was reluctant to give such advice. Mr Campbell: Then it won’t be much help to the farmers. The Board should be In a position to give advice, and if not, why are we paying a manager £3300 a year if the farmer derives no benefit in the form of advice? The chairman : The Meat Board offers advice as to marketing condp tlons, hut not ns to whether to soil to tli© works or ship direct to the Old Country. Mr Trotter intimated that he would write to the manager of the Meat Board and make available to members any information lie might receive,
