DRAGGED BY HORSE

LABOURER SERIOUSLY HURT,

AUCKLAND, January 6. Injuries to the head, chest, and left arm were received by a farm labourer, Petel Maxwell, aged 24, when he was dragged for nearly Half a mile by a horse at Whitlord to-day. He was brought to the Auckland Hospital. Maxwell went to catch a horse, and after doing so lie held it with a halter. The animal suddenly bolted, and before Maxwell could prevent it the halter had become entwined round his legs. He was dragged round and round the paddock for some time, over a ditch, and finally through a gateway into a, second paddock, where the horse continued to gallop at full speed. Another farmhand noticed Maxwell’s plight, and made an Tittem.pt to stop the horse. He was unable to do so, and further help had to be enlisted, the horse finally being cornered by threemen. When Maxwell was released he was conscious, but became unconscious almost immediately afterwards and did not revive for over two- hours. He had been dragged for nearly half a mile, and the bumping over the rough ground had proved sufficient to rip most of the clothing from bis body.
