Members of the Hokitika Fire Brigade and of the Druids Lodge are reouested to meet to-morrow to attend the funeral of their late member ,Mr John Findlay.

The Canterbury Education Board lias received advice of a grant by the Education Department lor the replacement of the old Timaru South School buildings, also lor the erection of a new residence at Taylurville, on the West Coast.
Recently the Education Department advised the Canterbury Education Board that no further subsidies would be granted' to School Committees on voluntary contributions until the end of the financial year. A curious position arose owing to certain committees having .incurred expenditure. The Board has been in communication with the Department on this aspect, but so far no reply has been received. Little hardship is anticipated, however, as the financial year ends in March.

Mr Fred Smith’s Christchurch dano orchestra which is having such a successful tour on the Coast this season, is due back at Hokitika next Tuesday night when a benefit will be tendered the R.S.A, hall funds. The dance, will bo held in the Soldiers\ Hall commencing at 8,30 o’clock, and will be n “a long night.” Popular prices will he charged and cool drinks and ices will be obtainable.- at the hall, The occasion should be n jolly evening to wind up the holiday round of dances.
An accident occurred on Mount Ruapehu on Friday atfternoon, when Mr S. Inglis, of Christchurch, one of a party of to visitors, fell on the ice and dislocated a shoulder, states the “New Zealand Herald.” The mishap occurred just after the party had reached the hot lakes at the summit. Mr Inglis was assisted through the snow to tile but on the mountain, where he collapsed. Mr Gordon Blythe, who was in charge of the party, improvised a stretcher with skiies and coats, and a slow descent of the mountain was begun. Miss Bended, of Auckland, volunteered to carry a message to the Chateau, and on her arrival a rescue party was organised. Scoria Flat was reached five hours affter the accident occurred. Mr Inglis is progressing -satisfactorily.
The death took place this morning about 9 o’clock off a well-known citizen Mr John Findlay of Bealey Street, after a long and painful illness. The deceased was born at sea and registered at Liverpool, the first port of call. He was 57 years of age and had been a resident of New Zealand for 37 years most of which had been spent on the West Coast. He was a member of the Hokitika Fire Brigade for the past 23 years and bad taken a prominent part in the 'formation of the local Druids Lodge branch. Deceased leaves a widow and two daughters (Mr R. Graham of Waiho, and Mrs W .Chotwynd of Hokitika), who will have the deep sympathy of a wide circle of friends in their bereavement,
