SEAMENS DISPUTE

TWO STEAMERS HELD UP

There was a shipping dispute to-day, involving the interstate passenger vessels Canberra and Ormiston. Both were held up, and it is likely that others will, be drawn into the dispute.

The Seamen’s Union objected to a certain method of picking up its members, and called all seamen off the Canberra and Ormiston.

There are two hundred and fifty passengers stranded.

DIVORCE FIGURES

After successive years of an increase in the number of divorces, petitions in New South Wales during 1930 showed a decided decrease. Of 1,783 petitions lodged, 1601 were disposed of. 1925 petitions were filed in 1929. The depression in blamed for the drop. MORE STEAMERS AFFECTED. 1 (Received this dav at 11.30 am.) SYDNEY", January 7. In addition to the steamers Ormeoton and Canberra cabled last night the Allara and Chillngoe and Mnldurn will be held up unless a settlement is reached. It is feared that every ship which signs up a crew under the odd system will fie laid up.

Investment stocks traded very quietly on the exchange when business was resumed after the Christmas vacation. Prices in nearly all sections were easier. Business was restricted partly by the fact that New Zealand StockExchange has not yet reopened.
