THEFT CHARGES

CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 5

By adopting a method of purloining goods when shop assistants had their hacks turned, Jack Hands, aged 19, of Fitzherbert Avenue, Palmerston North committed eleven thefts. He was caught at Ashburton and on appearing before Air AJosley S.M. this morning was put on probation for three years. Some of the stolen articles were received by Alfred Arthur Stanley, 24, of Kaikoura, and be was sentenced to four months bard labour. Both men pleaded guilty to breaking and entering a dwelling at Addington where they removed drawers from a- duchess in a room in which a. man was sleeping. On this charge they were committed for sentence.

YOUTH DROWNED

AUCKLAND, January 5

Leonard Cecil Walker, aged 17, of Auckland was drowned in a stream at Henderson last night through, the capsizing of a canoe. Another youth Howard Walker Muims managed to struggle ashore. Both were poor swimmers. FARM WORKER KILLED, FALL FROM. HAY STACK. AUCKLAND, January 5. While working on a haystack at Orini, near Tawpiri, this afternoon, a if arm* labourer, Robert Hastings, aged 50, whose home is at Huntly, missed bis footing and fell, breaking his neck. The accident occurred on the Farm of AY. F. Carter. Dr 'lsdale, of Huntley, was summoned, but on his arrival the man was dead. Hastings was a married man with a grown-up family.

DROWNING MYSTERY. FOXTON, January 5. A body that lues been identified at a coroner’s inquiry is that of Herbert Larsen, of Auckland. No evidence was submitted to show how, when or where the deceased got into the water. A verdict was returned that Larsen was drowned, there being no evidence of foul play.
