FATALITY AVERTED.

GIRLS’ COURAGEOUS ACT.

GISBORNE, January 5

A courageous act by girls averted a drowning fatality at Wainui Beach. A young lady got into difficulties being rapidly carried out to sea when Jean and Josephine Warren, the latter rising from a sick bed, swam to her rescue and after a strenuous struggle brought the body ashore in an exhausted condition. GISBORNE RAILWAY. DELEGATION LEAVES FOR WELLINGTON. . GISBORNE, January 5. A delegation, representing the principal local bodies of the district, left Gisborne this morning for Wellington for the purpose of interviewing Minsters on the subject of the suspension of the railway construction. It was pointed out at last night’s meeting, that the population of Gisborne and surrounding district served by the railway is thirty-five thousand, and that the intervening mountainous country prevents safe aitd : economic roads being constructed.

An unusual arrival in port at midday was a cutter rigged yacht, Larvik of seven tons, from Pago Pago. In this tiny craft a young Norwegian couple Elding Fambs and his wife, with an infant son, born on the voyage, are touring the itforld. They also carry a dog. The Larvik left Norway about two years ago, crossed the Atlantic and entered the Pacific through Panama Canal. Since then they have visited Papeete, Suva and other island ports.

ARSON CHARGE

CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 6

Because he could see nothing but bankruptcy ahead, William Pole, a storekeeper, aged 35, set fire to a store and dwelling at Barfield. 'lbis he admitted before the Magistrate today, when pleading guilty to a charge of arson. He was committed for sentence, ibn.il being allowed in two sureties of £IOQ and self in £IOO, The police said that the building wn# rdilly owned by ’ Donald Gillanders. Accused was a teunaut. Accused had financial difficulties and could not make a .success of bis business. The fire was discovered before it spread far. }Pole at first said the place had been (broken into and fired by the burglar, but later he confessed to the police.

With reference to. the butter tariff in Canada, the Acting-Prime Minister stated today that the position was being watched, and no statement woulo be made until the return of Hon. G. Forbes.

FALSE DECLARATION

GISBORNE, January 6

A young, bridegroom who called at Gisborne Police Station volunteered the information that he had made a false declaration at Gore for the purpose of procuring a marriage license. He was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence by the Magistrate, to-day, his name being surpressed. The accused having been unable to obtain his parents’ consent gave the girl’s age as 21. and his own as 22. Both were erroneous.

OILFIELDS REPORT. GISBORNE, January 6. Taranaki oil report states: —AVaitangi No. 1 well. The result of cementing casing as 368 feet is satisfactory, now preparing to cement again.
