ATTEMPT TO BURN SCHOOL

NAPIER, January 1. Evidences of a deliberate but unsuccessful attempt to burn down the convent school in Heretaunga Street, Hastings, were discovered hv firemen and police when summoned by an alarm given at 2.50 a.m. to-da.v. Little damage was done to the building, which is old and built entirely of wood, and which is shortly to be replaced by a new building towards the construction of which several thousands of pounds,have been collected. After the fire had been extinguished it- was’ discovered that someone had forced open a window . and' after pour'ing benzine or kerosene on the floor had thrown down a. lighted match.
• A passer-by noticed the outbreak and gave the alarm. The brigade quelled the outbreak before any very serious damage had been done. The insurance is £IOOO in the Phoenix Office,
