MISSING MEN.

Grave fears are felt for the safety of Air-Pilot iCaptain W. Pittendrugh, and a mining expert, M. S. Hamre, who have been missing in an arid paru of Central Australia, for twelve days. They were . engaged in mineral exploration, and left Alice • Springs on. December 24 to join other members of their party, camped 300 miles away at Ilbilba.. They were last seen by local aborigines, flying well off their course .Pittendrugh is a British pilot, and more recently was an instructor in aviation at Mascot, Sydney; while Hamre is a resident of Pethersham, Sydney. ■ Search planes have left for the scene. • 1 • YACHT RACE. (Received this day at 11 a.fn.) MELBOURNE, Je.ii. 3. The yacht Oimara which is to race the New Zealand yacht Restless - across the Tasman leaves next Saturday for the Dominion. She visits Sydney ■en route for stores and then sails for Auckland, and thence to Wellington. PREFERENCE REGULATIONS. • MELBOURNE, Jan 3,^ The validity of the regulations granting preference to members of waterside workers federation is being tested at law, Justice Stark granted an application by shipowners for injunction to restrain the' -Federal , Ministry'-. <■- -froth enforcing the regulations. ‘ A Full Court of the High Court will probably be specially constituted to- hj&ar the case next week.
SAYINGS BANK DEPOSITS. - ... _*s I MELBOURNE, January 3. London cables stated : —The agency of the Victorian State Savings Bank has been instructed to refuse deposits, and,this is believed to be a preliminary to its. closing. -• The general -manager, Mi- Coocli, said that it was not- intended to close the London agency, but further deposits were not wanted as the present rate of exchange-rendered transfer of money improfitable.
WHEAT BLOCKAGE. " SYDNEY, January 8. Of ninety-nine County wheat sales fifty-one being full; are being rationed with trucks to convey grain- to theterminal. Within a few days the silos will be obligated ,to refuse deliveries because terminal storage will be completely filled. The Minister of Agriculture stated he - was negotiating with two ' .large wheat merchants for the shipment of about half a million bushels. , •■ ■
