The miners proposal is weekly spread over of forty-five hours of five days of 7-f and a Saturday of The owners insist on a fortnightly spread of eighty-seven hours, consisting of ten days of eight hours, one Saturday of seven hours and the other Saturday a holiday, The miners representatives argue that the loss of a day’s pay means a reduction of wages averaging five shillings weekly, to which the employers reply that there is not money enough to pay the wages which prevailed under the eight hours arrangement. Only thirty per cent of the South Wales miners are members of the Federation, so it is not certain the stoppage would be extensive or prolonged. FRANCO IN BRUSSELS. ITALY’S UNEMPLOYED. ROME, December 30. The number of unemployed increased by 143 thousand in three months, and ic now 534 thousand, which is a record. Is is hoped there will he an •Improvement after the harvest in February. [Meanwhile only twelve thousand are drawing the dole.
CHINESE TARIFF. SHANGHAI, December 30. A new tariff schedule published today greatly increased the duties on Australian imports covering canned fruits, jams, rabbitskins, leather, wool timber. British imports affected by heavy duties are piece-goods and machinery. ARAB RAIDERS. ATTACKED BY FRENCH COLUMN. PARIS, December 30. A French mobile column on Christmas Day inflicted heavy losses on a band of two hundred Arab raiders near Abadln, Morocco. The trouble began at Christmas Eve, when the raiders attacked an encampment . of friendly Arabs killing many including the chief. The French column fought a three hour, engagement and aeroplanes then followed the raiders bombing them until they disappeared across the border, carrying many dead and leaving fifteen killed behind.
