Christmas Week was remarkably free from cases of infectious disease in Canterbury and on the West Coast, the total number of notifications being eight, compared with fourteen in the previous week and twenty-eight in the week ended on December 15. In Christchurch Week last year there were twenty-four cases notified, including ten of scarlet fever, and there were five deaths. Last week only one case of scarlet fever was notified and there were no deaths.

On Ora Square to-morrow (New Year’s Day) commencing at 1 o’clock a cycling sports gathering will be held. There are good entries for the events, the handicaps for which appeared in yesterday’s issue.
