MERCEDES GLEITZE
CROSSING OF WELLINGTON HARBOUR.
WELLINGTON, December 26. Swimming for seven hours, Miss Mercedes Gleitze made seemingly light work of crossing Wellington Harbour yesterday. She started off from Eastbourne ferry wharf, Wellington, at 11.39 a.m. to the accompaniment of cheers from a large crowd, and arrived at Day’s Bay, on the other side of the harbour at 6.42 p.m. after being seven, hours and three minutes in the water. She received a rousing reception from a large crowd on arrival at Day’s Bay. She is the third person to have swum the harbour, others being “tiny” Frevbere, and C. Claridge. Miss Gleitze used the breast stroke for the greater part of the way across, occasionally changing to the trudgeon. She was accompanied bv several launches, the crews of which provided music for the swimmer.
