EMPIRE BUTTER
Air Forbes, tlie New Zealand Prime Minister, pointed out at the banquet to the Imperial Conference delegates given by the Federation of Chaihbbrs of Commerce of the British Empire, that the United Kingdom stjll buys each year huge quantities of Danish butter, and lie emphasised the advantages to be gained if this business were transferred to Empire countries, which are far larger purchasers
of British goods than Denmark. There seems no reasonable doubt that the quality of Empire butter is at least equal to that of the foreign product, for which, moreover, comments the London Chamber of Commerce Journal, the consumer pays appreciably more. The reason, therefore, for the continuance of such heavy purchases from Denmark, in spite of the marked progress made by Empire countries appears to be due to something less tangible than a plain consideration of price or quality—the habit of the housewife, for instance, or possibly, tlie method of displaying, or other similar causes.
