The Westland County Council has received authority to expend a grant of £IOO, £ for £, for widening a section of Upper Kokatahi road. The work is now being, put in hand, local labour in the district being employed.

The Soldiers’ art union will be drawn about 10 p.in. in the Social Boom of the Soldiers’ Hall, Hamilton Street, on Wednesday night. In the short time remaining tickets are procurable from Mr It. Paterson and at several shops in town. The proceeds will bo devoted to the hall funds.

The weather on Saturday for the second day’s races was a very fine one, hot enough to satisfy anyone. Yesterday was another beautiful day and it drew large crowds into the country to the various resorts. The past two days have been easily the warmest of the present season.

A six rinks match between Runanga and Gveymouth was played on the Runanga Green. The green was in first class order and coupled with the excellent weather, some interesting games resulted. Greymouth won by 126 to 118.

The Governor-General's party to visit the district next month will number seven. The advance of the party will reach Hokitika on the 27th January en route south, and accommodation has been reserved at the Red Lion Hotel. Their Excellencies arrive on the afternoon of the 31st January. After the formal visit here, a week to be spent in South Westland, and on the return journey the Vice-Regal party will be accommodated at Mr Mclntosh’s hotel.

The Black Hand Society are holding a dance in the R.S.A. Hall on New Year’s Eve commencing at 9.30. The Society’s Orchestra will be on deck and will carry on until the ship sinks. They intend to say Good Bye to 1930 at midnight, and will give a rousing welcome to 1931 from then onwards. Admission 2s 6d.—Advt.

Through falling down some steps at a residence in Alexander Street, Greymouth, a child, Betty Thompson, aged six years, a daughter of Air and Mrp Leslie Thompson, of Ruru, sustained a fractured skull. She was admitted to the Grey Hospital and was in a serious condition on Saturday, and had not regained consciousness. An operation was yesterday performed on the child and her condition showed a slight improvement, but sbe had not regained consciousness.
