Tt seems almost incredible, but it’s a fact that in early Victorian days there were no smoking rooms, and to be seen smoking in the streets was regarded as the worst of bad form. Today no club-house, hotel, or large private residence is considered complete without its smoke-room, and for every man who smoked when Victoria was Queen, a hundred smoke poav. Well, the more the merrier! Tobacco is no longer considered a luxury. It has become a necessity. But its purity is of paramount importance,* and as imported brands all contain, more or less, an excess of the poisonous nicotine. they cannot he considered safe smoking. The world’s purest tobaccos are the New Zealand toasted ones. Toasting eliminates the nicotine, so that you can smoke these brands Avith absolute impunity. There are four brands only: Riverhead Gold, Navy Cut No. 3. Cavendish, and Cut Plug No. 10. All are recommended for their flavour and aroma. Of course there are imitations! Be on the look out for them.
