ON WORLD DEPRESSION. ROME, Dec. 25
Addressing the Sacred College or Cardinals, the Pope deplored the worldwide unemployment and ecoonomic depression. He emphasised the need for better social international organisation, thereby making fraternal co-operation possible between the di lie relit classes and peoples, instead of causing unbridled rivalry am*, competition, which, sooner or later, must lead to disaster.
The Pope protested against the growth of 'Protestant propaganda in Italy, which, lie declared, was growing very intense in defiance of the terms of the Lateran Treaty. Referring to the peace movement, the Pope declared that it was impossible that peace could hist long as there was now uncompromising nationalism and distinct competition, instead of a genuine love of country ami united co-operation. We can mi t believe threats of war. No civilised State could lie so monstrously homicidal to think ol another war while the world is still sullering from the efleets of the last one. The Pope said that misconstructions were placed on the arrangements sanc-
tion bv the Church iii connection with the marriage of King Roris of Bulgarin. These had led him to prepare an encyclical upon mixed marriages, which was .shortly being issued. .Mixed marriages, he said, was discouraged by the Church. King Boris’s marriage to the Italian Princess was only sanctioned under the strict conditions that were accepted in writing by the bridal coupie.
