Recently the Railway Department erected a shelter near Lake Maliinnpua. station for boiling water, and the Westland Tourist Society has provided two pumice coppers, which will he retained there, and may he used in connection with all picnic excursions. They will he in use to-morrow, and early in the new year for an excursion being organised from Christchurch. This convenience of this special service will be appreciated by excursionists and picnic parties. _
A farm worker, Mr Hector Johnstone, who had been spraying ragwort with sodium chlorate, was severely burned at Paojigaroa, Bay of Plenty, last week, stated the Taranaki ( Daily News.” He was returning home wheeling the sprayer and his clothes had become saturated with the chemical. Friction caused by rubbing against the sprayer ignited his clothing. His presence of mind directed him to a horse trough nearby, and the flames were quenched.
Everybody’s Pictures showing the usual enterprise in the motion picture business, is now having the latest Western Electric talking machine established in the Princess Theatre. It will ensure all the latest star pictures being shown at Hokitika in the same pleasing manner as in the large centres. The installation is now wen advanced, and on Monday night the machine will be definitely in operation. The management is using every effort to give the theatre going public the very best service, and the enterprise is sure to be appreciated in the most practical way,
The Minister of Internal Affairs has issued the following statement regarding the sale of fireworks:—“The attention of the Department has been called to statements in the Press regarding the sale of fireworks. The position is that no restriction is being placed on the sale of the smaller types of fireworks. Most wholesale dealers have submitted samples to the Department for approval and have been notified which varieties may be sold without license and permit. These include fireworks such as Roman candles, Catherine wheels, Chinese crackers, but not the larger bangers. Provided that retailers obtain the assurance of wholesale suppliers that the fireworks have been approved they will be quite safe in selling without fear of breaking the law.”

The death of Mrs Margaret Crysall a well known and respected resident- of Ahaurn, took place yesterday at the Grey Hospital. The deceased, who was 54 years of age, leaves two sons and one daughter.

The Black Hand Society are holding a dance in the R..S.A. Hall on New Year’s Eve commencing at 9.30. The Society’s Orchestra will be on deck and will carry on until the ship sinks. On Christmas Day a progressive pairs competition was played on the local howling green, five games being played during the day. The winners were lead, Mr Thompson five wins, while in tlie skips Messrs Sherman and W. Wilson tied with four wins each.
The dance in the Kanieri Public Hall last evening in aid of the Tennis Club was -a pronounced success.
There was a crowded attendance, the assemblage enjoying the proceedings immensely. Excellent music was provided by the popular Fred Smith’s Jazz Band and the dancers were kept busy. A nice supper was served by the ladies and the ball is voted an outoutstanding success from all viewpoints.

The new low light at Pencarrow, installed by lie Wellington Harbour Board, was placed in commission for the first time on Monday evening. The light is erected on g higher elevation than the old one, and its radius is greater says the “Dominion.” With the new powered light on Baring Head, and a far more efficient low light as a guide to the actual entrance to the harbour, Wellington can now be said to be a very wellenuinned port from a lighting point of view.
