RADIO PROGRAMME

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 24th

All stations will be on the air today. from noon till after mid-night. Special programmes have been arranged.

The IYA Orchestral Octet under the direction of Mr Harold Baxter will be heard in many interesting suites. Included in the evening’s programme will bo two vocalists, Mr and Mrs Victor Baxter who will be heard in solos and duets, the majority of which have been chosen from the musical comedy “Maid of the Mountains.” The programme will be complete with “The Conversion of Scrooge” (from “Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens). This will be given by Mr J. M. Clark who will also be heard in “Christmas at Sea” by Robert Louis Stevenson. Barry Tngall and his Hawaiian Quartet will present a budget of new numbers and the programme will include a session of dance music from 10 p.m. till 11 p.m. Until midnight Christmas carols and hymns will be given by the IYA Broadcasting Choir under the direction of Mr Lon Barnes.

From 8 p.m. to 10 p.m., 2YA listeners will be entertained with selections by the Salon Orchestra, the Golden Hula Hawaiian Orchestra and vocal numbers by Miss Hilda Chudlev, Miss Kathleen Ferris, Messrs J. H. Lee a rid Will Hancock. Scottish humour will be dispensed by the Christchurch entertainer, Mr Jock Lockhart, who is under special engagement to tour the New Zealand stations, and humorous numbers of a. topical nature will be given by Mr Will Yates. From 10 p.m. to. 11.50 p.m. there will be something in the nature of a “Community Sing.” The Lyric Quartet will sing the numbers and gatherings of listeners round loud speakers throughout the Dominion will no doubt sing with them. Following the usual custom, the Midnight Mass will again he relayed from St. Gerard’s Redemptorist Church by 2YA.

At 3YA, a two hours’ studio concert programme will be followed by an hour’s dance music, then from 11 o’clock till 11.55 p.m. there will be Cl "istmas carols after which a rebroadcast of the Midnight Mass at St. Gerard’s. Redemptorist Church, Wellington, will be canned out. Very bright will be the studio concert.

The 4YA Studio Trio will present the instrumental music on 4YA’s programme and Miss Betty Hamilton (contralto), Miss Bowler (elocutionist) and Miss May Brooks (soprano) and Mr James Swan (tenor) will provide the vocal numbers. At the conclusion of the Dance Session which will follow the concert, 4YA will broadcast Christmas music till the midnight chimes usher in Christmas Day.

Thursday, Christmas Day, early morning Children’s sessions, in which all uncles and aun+ s will participate, will tal4e place at all stations—at 9 a.m. at IYA, 3YA and 4YA, and at 10 a.m. at 2YA. All stations will broadcast the religious services. Special programmes tor both afternoon and evening have been arranged. There will be no evening Children’s Sessions nor News Sessions, but the Dinner Music Sessions will begin at 6 o’clock as usual. From 7 o’clock till the concert session begins there will be a relay of a church service or a studio programme appropriately arranged in keeping with the day. From 8 to 10 p.m. all stations will broadcast concerts of a high standard. 2YA has an interesting attraction for the afternoon of Christmas Day when the Minister of Health, the Hon. A. J. Stallworthy, speaking from his home in Auckland, will officially open the radio reception equipment which has just been installed in the Porirua Mental Hospital where it should prove of immense value in aiding the inmates towards recovery.

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 26th. IYA listeners will have the opportunity of hearing the presentation of the Christmas pantomime, “Cinderalla up-to-date.” The east has been well chosen and includes some of Auckland’s leading talent. The instrumental will be in the hands of Mr Reg. Morgan and his orchestra. The IYA programme will also feature Mr Jock Lockhart, the Scottish entertainer of Christchurch.

The 2YA Orchcsfcrina will play gay, popular and novelty numbers and popular songs. Musical comedy items will be sung by Miss Phyllis Leighton. Mr Ken Rigby will sing a. group of light numbers and ballads and Mr F. Hastings will give humorous recitals. Accordion solos will be palyed by Mr G. McGuigan. Excerpts from “No, No, Nanette.’ “The Sunshine Girl” and “The Quaker Girl” will be heard from 3YA, the vocalists being Miss Frances Hamerton, Miss M. Jennings, Mr Russell Sumner and Mr T. D. Williams, in solos, duets and choruses. Humorous recitations will be given by Mr H. Instone. A bright instrumental programme will be provided by the Studio Octet. Dunedin’s variety programme will include an entertainment to he given on the marimbaphone by Mr H. Dalzeil. The vocalists on this occasion will be Mr J. Paterson (Scottish comedian!, Miss D. Youd (soprano), Mr J. Simpson (tenor) and Mr D. Wratball (baritone). Ttems will be played bv the Studio Trio. The whole programme will he of a very popular nature.
