The Borough Council is having useful work done in the planing of the main highway at the entrance road sections to the town. Both roads had become badly corrugated, and tbe effect of the heavily shod drag is to iron down Die bumps, Tbe County road plant is loaned for tbe purpose.
The eases of infectious and other notifiable diseases reported in the Canterbury -and West Coast Health Districts for the week ended noon on Monday were one-half less than tbe total for the previous week. Last w eek’s total was 14, as follows •—Canterbury: Scarlet fever, 3; diphtheria, 1; enteric, 1; tuberculosis, 5. West Coast: Diphtheria, 2; tuberculoids, 1; erysipelas, 1. No deaths from infections diseases were reported last week in either district.

This scheme, however, operates only when citizens (town or country) are prepared to take advantage of the half wages subsidy. Those employed already are giving satisfaction •In useful work, and to assist in providing work more help might be forth•.'coming from those who can arrange for the extra labour. So far no move has been made by any farmers to take advantage of the scheme. At the request of the Labour party representatives, Messrs McGavin and Harvey have been added to the local unemployment committee.
The summer meeting of the Westland Racing Club is set down for Friday (Boxing Day) and Saturday. The Hokitika racecourse iis in capital order for the occasion, while the grounds arid appointments reflect the fullest credit on the Caretaker. Tbe fields are good for Friday’s racing, and the quality engaged is of a higher standard than usual. An enjoyable meeting should result. Last evening a party of entertainers visited the Men tab Hospital awl Westland Hospital for the purpose of giving a concert for the inmates. At each institution the visitors were cordially received and their efforts were much' appreciated. The programme consisted of bright musical numbers, and in addition a. combined choir rendered Christmas Carols. At the conclusion of the concert at the Westland Hospital, the Matron kindly entertained the party at supper.
At a public meeting held at Kumara to elect a medical committee for the ensuing year, Mr James Murphy presided. Tn his opening remarks, he statthat the small attendance was not encouraging, but apparently the public were satisfied with the committee’s past year’s work. Mr W. H. Evenden (hon. secretary)* read the balance sheet which showed a small credit balance. The Chairman regretted that some people failed to respond to the collectors’ appeal to pay the annual call of £l. Mr H. Hamer supported the remarks of the Chairman, and said that only for the success of the. ball, they would not be able to show a credi.t balance. Other speakers, Messrs J. A. Peever, G. Pamment, M, Treacy, J. Hurren and G. McEnaney eulogised the good work of the Chair* man and Hon, Secretary. The old committee were re-elected, and collectors were asked to endeavour to collect sufficient before the end of the year, in order to pay the first instalment to the Westland Hospital Board.

One of the prospectors, speaking of the find,'said in his opinion it was ’ the next best to the gold discovery on the Ross Flats. Gold has been traced from top to bottom on a, face of 300 feet.
At the Magistrate’s Court on Monday before Mr D. J. Evans J.P., John Gray charged ' with drunkenness was fined £1 or 48 hours imprisonment, and allowed seven days to pay the fine. This morning at the Police Court, befor# Messrs Evans and H. T. Parry, J Justices, the same accused was charged with being found drunk atid aish with ' being an idle person without visible , , nj 14 means of support. ’On ; the first ; 4 - charge accused was convicted and discharged, and on the second convicted and sentenced to one month in Grey mouth gaol.
The Borough and Harbour author!- i - ■ ties held a conference this, morning relative to a site for a Borough .rubbish dump, Mr M. .Houston . Th«v : Mayor (Mr Perry) explained the position that the Borough desired 1 to re-. : tain the former beach site,. but strict- p: er control would be enforced. It was proposed to let the sole carting ,of rubbish by contract to one carter, who would be responsible for the condition of the dump, and take all necessary precautions against unauthorised use of th© dump. Mr Evans, stated the town had no other suitable place, and th© site would be the most economical for the ratepayers. Mr Heenan pointed out how the dump had been misused in the past, Mr , McTn+osh moved and Mr Richards seconded that the request of the de- ; putation be granted. This was sup- i ported by th© Chairman and 'carried. ' ; j The necessary action will now be taken by the Borough Council.
