ONE THOUSAND MEN. GIVEN JOBS IN AUCKLAND, (By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND,; Dec. 23; A remarkable achievement wa.s carried out to-day by the; Labour Department, the Engineers’ Department of the City Council, and' the * Local Unemployment, Committee in finding work for about 1000 men. The fund available was a grant of £24,000 from the Unemployment Board, advice of which was received by telegram on Monday. Practically every man who reported up to three, o’clock this after- 1 noon was engaged. The remainder of the unemployed are requested to report to-morrow morning, when it is honed work will be [found for several • hundreds more. This question was mentioned to the Acting Prime Minister. Hon. Mr Ransom, to-dav. Mr Ransom stated definitely the i matter had not been considered bv . Cabinet. Special reference was made to the possibility of the Government deciding to retire civil servants on superannuation before the completion of forty years’ service.. Mr Ransom indicated that no jfgfyb step has,been considered bv the .Government.
