TUESDAY, DECEMBER 23rd
lYA’s programme for the evening has been arranged and will he given by Misses Berta Carr and Maid a Hooker and their company. These two ladies stand, very high in the musical circles of Auckland.
The 2YA programme will feature what has been described as one of the world’s finest Christmas stories, certainly one of the most human, Dicken’s famous “Christmas Carol.” Listeners will be treated to a dramatisation arranged by the eminent English entertainer—Clement May. The remaining portion of the programme will contributed by the Melodie Four, Mrs R. S. Allwright, and the Salon Orchestra, which will also play the music incidental to the ‘‘ Chri stm as Carol.”
Well diversified will be 3YA’s programme. The Dulcet Duo (Miss Nellie Lowe and Mr A. G-. Thompson) will sing solos and duets. Mr E. A. Dowell, popular baritone, will be heard in three songs. Violin and piano improvisations will be contributed by Messrs D. Mitchell and Bert Goodland. There will be songs at the piano by the Joyous Pair. Mr E. G. Williams will play two trombone solos and humorous items will be given by Mr Reg, Lamb. During the evening 3YA will re-boadcast the 2YA presentation of the “Christmas Carol.” A humorous futuristic fantasia will claim much attention when presented by the Kaikorai Band at 4YA this evening. The item is entitled “From Auckland to Dunedin in Thirty Minutes. During this fantasia, several selections, characteristic of the four principal centres of New Zealand, will be played by the Band, and four original songs will be presented by Mr Bert Rawlinson, baritone. The music for these songs has been arranged and composed specially for the occasion by the conductor of the Band, Mr Thos. J. Kirk-Burnnand. The evening’s programme in general will be a very bright one. Assisting artists will be Miss Clarke (contralto), Miss Ella Hayden (soprano), Mr R. B. MacDonald and Miss N. Buswell (elocutionist). WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 24th. All stations will be on the air today from noon till after mid-night. Special programmes have been arranged. The IYA Orchestral Octet under the direction of Mr Harold Baxter will be heard in many interesting suites. Included in the evening’s programme will be two vocalists, Mr and Mrs Victor Baxter who will he heard in solos and duets, the majority of which have been chosen from the musical comedy “Maid of the Mountains.” The programme will be complete Avith “The Conversion' of Scrooge” (from “Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens). This will be given by Mr J. M. Clark who will also be heard in “Christmas at Sea” by Robert Louis Stevenson. Barry Ingall and his Hawaiian Quartet will present a budget of new numbers and the programme will include a session of dance rmisic from 10 p.m. till 11 p.m. Until midnight Christmas carols • and hymns will be given by the IYA Broadcasting Choir under the direction of Mr Len Barnes.
From 8 p.m. to 10 p.m., 2YA listeners will be entertained with selections by the Salon Orchestra, the Golden Hula Hawaiian Orchestra and vocal numbers by Miss Hilda Chudley, Miss Kathleen Ferris, Messrs J. H. Lee and Will Hancock. Scottish humour will be dispensed by the Christchurch entertainer, Mr Jock Lockhart, who is under special engagement to tour the New Zealand stations, and humorous numbers .of a topical nature will be given by Mr Will Yates. From 10 p.m. to 11,50 p.m. there will be something in the nature of a “Oommunity Sing.” The Lyric Quartet will sing the numbers and gatherings of listeners round loud speakers throughout the Dominion will no doubt sing with them. Following the usual custom, the Midnight Mass will again be relayed from St. Gerard’s Redemptbrist. Church by 2YA. At 3YA, a two hours’ studio concert programme will be followed by an hour’s dance, music, then from 11 o’clock till 11.55 p.m. there will be Christmas carols after which a rebroadcast of the Midnight Mass at St. Gerard’s Redemptorist Church, Wellington, will be carried out. Very bright will be the studio concert. The 4YA Studio Trio will present the instrumental music on 4YA’s programme and Miss Betty Hamilton (contralto), Miss Bowler (elocutionist! and Miss May Brooks (soprano) and Mr James Swan (tenor) will provide the vocal numbers. At the conclusion of the Dance Session* which will follow the concert, 4YA will broadcast Christmas music till the midnight chimes usher in Christmas Day.
Thursday, Christmas Day, early morning Children's sessions, in which all uncles and aunt s will participate, will taltje place at all stations—at 9 a.m. at IYA, 3YA and 4YA, and at 10 a.m. at 2YA. All stations will broadcast the religious services. Special programmes for both afternoon and evening have been arranged. There will be no evening Children’s Sessions nor News Sessions, but the Dinner Music Sessions will begin at 6 o’clock i\is usual*. From 7 o’clock till the concert session begins there will be a relay of a church service or a studio programme appropriately arranged in keeping with the dav. From 8 to 10 p.m. all stations will broadcast concerts of a high standard.
2YA has an interesting attraction for the afternoon of. Christmas Day when the Minister of Health, the Hon. A. J. Stallworthy, speaking from his home in Auckland, .will officially open the radio reception equipment Avhieh has just been installed in the Porirua Mental Hospital Avher.e it should prove of immense value in aiding the inmates towards recovery.
