A regular passenger service connecting with the railway at Hoistings was inaugurated at 7 a.m. to-day when a Dominion Airways plane left for Hastings with two passengers. THEFT CHARGE. Last night, John Baton, County traffic inspector, riding a motor cycle in the direction of his home at Te Kopuru came into.a head on collision just over the Kaihu bridge or) the main road with a motor van, driven by a. young named Selicli. It was raining hard at the time. Evidently Patou did not see the van, which ran right over him, inflicting terrible injuries to head, legs, both of which Were broken, arms and chest. He was immediately rushed to the hospital where an operation was performed, and to-day, although his condition is very serious, he is reported much better. The driver of the van escaped injury. ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. WELLINGTON, Dec. 22. A story of the desperation of a man in police custody was told in the Magistrate’s Court, to-day, when George Frederick Murphy, 34, labourer, was charged with attempting to commit suicide. Sub-Inspector Ward said that Murphy was arrested on December 7, on a charge of theft. When he was taken to the watch-house, a i aver blade, found in his pocket, was placed on the counter, and accused jd it up and cut his throat rather badly. He was taken to the Im-oital and was only discharged to-cl.iv. Murphy, who had to* he assisted into tire dock and could hardly speak, wafi convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called cm, within twelve months. On the charge of theft, he was remanded until December 29.
