NEW RAILWAYS
MAY BE STOPPED. (By Telegraph—Press Association). WELLINGTON, December 19. Railway construction problems, it is understood have been engaging the attention of the Cabinet recently, and it is stated there is a decided possibility of the programme which had been laid down by the Government for the next tew years being modified considerably. ' It is reported the Government lias been considering the cessation of activities on one or two of the lines under construction, but official confirmation is not available. 1 lie Minister of Railways, Mr Yeitcli left last night on a flying visit to Christchurch in connection with railway matters, and be will return to Wellington to-morrow. MR RANSOM RETICENT. WELLINGTON, December 19. According to an announcement made by the Acting Prime Minister Mr Ransom, this evening an official statement upon the Government’s intentions concerning future railway; line construction will be made in the next few days. The suggestion that the Government had been considering the cessation of activities on one or two lines under construction was referred to Mr Ransom, who said that although he was not prepared to say anything at the moment, at statement would be issued in the near future.
